Today is Gu Yu, the sixth of the twenty-four solar terms and the last of the spring season.
According to legend, during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty, a flood broke out in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, and a young man, Gu Yu, moved the villagers to the city walls and incidentally saved a peony flower, which was planted in the Garden of Hundred Flowers1 for careful care.
In order to repay the kindness of the peony flower fairy Dan Feng took human form to save Gu Yu’s seriously ill mother, but unexpectedly Dan Feng was captured by a vulture 1 eagle and was 1 forced to make wine with blood.
Knowing this, Gu Yu rushed to the cave of the bald eagle and rescued Dan Feng, but unfortunately died himself.
To commemorate him, the people named this day “Gu Yu”, which is the origin of Gu Yu Festival.
And today is also the United Nations Chinese Day, “Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things but learning another way to think about things”.
